Ensuring a high level of teacher training

At least till 2030, Saxony will see a high demand for teachers.  In March 2018, the Saxon state government therefore decided to maintain the high number of new students in teacher training courses even beyond 2024 and guarantee reliable framework conditions at universities to this end. With the immediate action programme “Start 2020”, which was decided upon by the Saxon State Government, it was established in January 2020 that the number of study places in teacher training courses should increase from the current 2,400 to 2,700 annually.

Teacher training is thus ensured for the long term at a qualitatively and quantitatively high level and lays the foundation for universities to be able to extend a majority of the service and employment relationships currently limited by the 2020 training package for an indefinite period. This means that all five teacher training universities

  • TU Dresden
  • Leipzig University
  • TU Chemnitz
  • University of Music “Carl Maria von Weber” Dresden
  • University of Music and Theatre “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” Leipzig

can create significantly better conditions for university employees who are required in large numbers. In this way, it will also be possible to ensure high-quality and reliable study conditions for the large number of students in teacher training courses as well as lateral entrants in the coming years.

Due to the current demand, teacher training has become important in universities. At the Leipzig University, about a fifth of all students are enrolled in teacher training courses; at the TU Dresden it is about every sixth student. Such high numbers should not compromise the quality of training.
